Approximately 5% of the world’s population has access to commercial LTE services – just over 350 million people, according to analyst firm Wireless Intelligence.
Half of the current population coverage is located in North America, 40% in Asia Pacific, 7% in Europe and the remainder in the Middle East and Africa.
Despite the hype surrounding LTE as a solution to improve mobile broadband coverage in rural areas, it remains predominantly an urban play.
Among the 40 LTE networks that have launched to date, only German operators covered rural areas at launch – a requirement of their license obligations, says Wireless Intelligence.
Overall, spotty urban coverage relying on Circuit Switched Fallback (CSFB) appears the most common approach for initial LTE rollouts.
By the end of 2013, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sweden and Denmark are expected to have nationwide LTE coverage.
Elsewhere, LTE network expansion will be demand-driven or dependent on the release of additional spectrum – notably in the 700 MHz band (Canada).
A number of operators have begun their LTE operations in urban areas by offering LTE services exclusively to corporate users.
This was the case with the LTE launches for CSL (Telstra) Hong Kong, Elisa Finland and Glo Mobile (Globacom) Nigeria, all of which were initially targeted at the enterprise segment.
